Bridal Makeup Trial: What to Expect

How a trial works, what to bring, and how to leave with a look you are certain about.

By Afifa Latif · The Hollywood Bride

A bridal trial is not a dress rehearsal for the sake of it. It is a design session: the time to test products on your skin, decide on lashes and lip colour, and make sure the look works with your dress, hair and photography. Done well, it takes the guesswork out of the wedding morning.

When to schedule it

Most brides book their trial two to three months before the wedding. That leaves time for changes while keeping your skin, tan and hair colour close to how they will be on the day.

What to bring

  • Photos of makeup looks you love, and one or two you do not
  • A photo of your dress, or a top in a similar neckline and colour
  • Your veil or hair accessories if you have them
  • Any skincare you use daily and anything your skin reacts to

How to arrive

Come with clean, moisturised skin and no makeup. For hair, follow your stylist’s advice: many styles hold best on hair washed the day before. Wear a button-up top so you can change without disturbing the look.

What happens during the trial

Your artist will look at your skin, bone structure and features, then build the look in stages so you can give feedback along the way. Expect to talk about coverage, how defined you want your eyes, lash style and lip colour. It is normal to try two versions of a detail, such as a soft lip and a bolder one, and choose between them.

Test it in real life

The best trials are worn afterwards. Take photos in daylight and with flash, wear the look for the rest of the day and see how it lasts. If you are getting married in summer or down the Shore, notice how it handles heat.

Speak up

Your artist wants honest feedback. If something does not feel like you, say so during the trial, not on the wedding morning. The goal is a look that feels like the best version of yourself.
