Hollywood Waves or an Updo? Choosing Your Bridal Hair
How to choose a bridal hairstyle that suits your dress, veil, venue and weather.
Your hairstyle frames your whole look, from the neckline of your dress to how your veil falls. Here is how to choose between the two most-requested bridal styles and the options in between.
Hollywood waves
Glossy, sculpted waves are timeless and romantic, and they photograph beautifully from the side and back. They suit:
- Strapless, off-the-shoulder and simple necklines
- Indoor and evening weddings
- Brides who usually wear their hair down and want to feel like themselves
In heat or humidity, loose waves can drop, so your stylist will prep and set them to hold, or suggest a half-up version.
The updo
An updo keeps hair off your face and neck all day, which is why it is a favourite for summer and outdoor weddings. It suits:
- High necklines and open or detailed backs you want to show off
- Cathedral veils and statement hair accessories
- Long days with lots of hugging and dancing
The in-between options
A low chignon, a sleek pony or a half-up style gives you some of both. These work well when you want movement without worrying about the weather.
Think about your veil
Where your veil attaches changes everything. A veil set under an updo creates a classic line; a veil worn with waves usually sits at the crown. Bring your veil to your trial so your stylist can place it properly.
Test it
Try your style at your trial and wear it for a few hours. Take photos from the back and side, and move around. If it still feels right at the end of the day, you have your answer.
